• Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

     

    The Sumter District Schools receive funding from the U. S. Department of Education through the ESSA initiative. The ESSA was signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015, and represents good news for our nation’s schools. This bipartisan measure reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESSA), the nation’s national education law and longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students. The new law builds on key areas of progress in recent years, made possible by the efforts of educators, communities, parents, and students across the country. Please use the following link to access ESSA information. https://www.ed.gov/essa?src=rn
     
    Title I, Part A (TIPA) is the U.S. Department of Education’s largest K–12 grant program. It provides supplemental funding to help low-income schools improve the academic achievement of educationally disadvantaged students.     Title II, Part A, federal grant funds are awarded from the Florida Department of Education to support the initiatives listed below. For further information, please contact Cynthia Simmons or access the Professional Learning webpage.
     
    • Improving teacher quality and meeting the requirement to have all core subject area teachers highly qualified
    • Providing professional development that improves the knowledge of teachers, principals, administrators and, in appropriate cases, paraprofessionals
    • Increasing student achievement, and eliminating the achievement gap
    • Recruiting and retaining highly qualified teachers
    • Providing induction and mentoring programs for new teachers
    • Reducing class size

    Title III, Part A, federal funds supplementary activities to assist English Language Learner (ELL) students become proficient in English language acquisition and meet state proficiency targets in reading, math and science.  Title III also funds supplementary staff development activities and parent training.  Please contact Jennifer Wyatt for more information or to make suggestions concerning Title III activities.  If you need assistance in Spanish, please call 352-793-2315 X50210.

    Title IV, Part A, Safe and Drug Free Schools, funds “proven-effective” programs in schools that address violence prevention and alcohol, tobacco and other drugs prevention.  The programs are chosen based on the prioritized results of needs assessments such as school discipline data, the School Environmental Safety Incident Report (SESIR) and the Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey (FYSAS).  For more information, please contact Ellen Coomer.

    Title X, Part C, McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, is federal legislation dealing with the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness.  Each school and the district have a Homeless Liaison whose responsibilities are to identify children who are homeless, make homeless families aware of their rights and to remove barriers that may interrupt a child’s enrollment in school.  The school liaison assists the parent in deciding whether it is best for the child to attend the school of origin or the local school.  For more information, please contact Ellen Coomer.
